Little Bottles or Big Horns

1 Samuel 8: 19-22

1 Samuel 10: 1

1 Samuel 16: 1

Text Scripture:

1 Samuel 8:19 Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;

20 That we also may be like all the nations; and that our king may judge us, and go out before us, and fight our battles.

21 And Samuel heard all the words of the people, and he rehearsed them in the ears of the LORD.

22 And the LORD said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king. And Samuel said unto the men of Israel, Go ye every man unto his city.

1 Samuel 10:1 Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because the LORD hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance?

1 Samuel 16:1 And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.

Intro:

·        We have before us a story of two kings … Saul and David

·        These two kings represent the two wills of God:

o       His PERMISSIVE will

o       His PERFECT will

We experience the PERMISSIVE will of God when He allows us to experience things WE WANT in a way WE WANT THEM instead of His will for us.

We experience the PERFECT will of God when we experience things in our lives because this is what GOD has chosen for us.

There is a big difference in the two!!!

Many Christians … churches … ministries … nations … aren’t experiencing the FULL blessings of God today because they are operating in the PERMISSIVE will of God, and NOT in the PERFECT will of God.

You come seeking revival …

I submit to you that the shortest route to revival is for God’s people to become dissatisfied with the PERMISSIVE will of God for their lives and church … and DEMAND the PERFECT will of God.

Today I want to examine two kings that the prophet Samuel anointed as kings of Israel, Saul and David, and draw a parallel between the PERMISSIVE will of God and the PERFECT will of God.  Tonight I want to examine these thoughts:

1: Vigilante Arrogance or a Vicarious Appointment

2: A Vial or a Vessel

3: A Veto or a Virtuoso

4: A Void or a  Vestige

5: A Vexing Spirit or a Victorious Spirit

1: Vigilante Arrogance or a Vicarious Appointment

a. Vigilante Arrogance: (God’s PERMISSIVE will)

The sons of Samuel, who were ruling the people, had become corrupt.

The people rose up in vigilante style … and demanded a king

1 Samuel 8:19 Nevertheless the people refused to obey the voice of Samuel; and they said, Nay; but we will have a king over us;

The permissive will of God is often rooted in His people failing to hear His man (vs 19) refused to hearken to the voice of Samuel

It is often rooted in wanting to conform to everybody else (vs. 20) that we also may be like all the nations

Note what God told Samuel: (vs 22) And Jehovah said to Samuel, Hearken unto their voice, and make them a king.

This was God’s PERMISSIVE Will!

            b. Vicarious Appointment (Vicarious means SUBSTITUTIONARY) (God’s PERFECT will)

The PERFECT will of God revolves around God’s wishes … not mans!

The PERFECT will of God is often revealed in strange places and in strange ways (David wasn’t even of his father Jesse’s radar screen) I have one more son … a shepherd … a VERY UNLIKELY CANDIDATE FOR KING!!!

1: Vigilante Arrogance or a Vicarious Appointment

2: A Vial or a Vessel

PERMISSIVE will … a vial:

1 Samuel 10:1 Then Samuel took the vial of oil, and poured it upon his head, and kissed him, and said, Is it not because Jehovah has anointed thee prince over his inheritance?

The PERMISSIVE will of God carries a small anointing!!!

The PERMISSIVE will of God substitutes good for best.  (Not the usage of the word Prince in verse 1.  It means a Captain.  Not a King.  A Captain. (Almost … but not quite!)

PERFECT will … a horn:

1 Samuel 16:1 And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.

The PERFECT will of God comes with a FULL anointing from God!!!

The problem today with many churches and Christians is they are operating from a vial … when they should be operating with a full horn of Oil!!!

1: Vigilante Arrogance or a Vicarious Appointment

2: A Vial or a Vessel

3: A Veto or a Virtuoso

PERMISSIVE will brings comes with an eventual veto:

1 Samuel 16:1 And the LORD said unto Samuel, How long wilt thou mourn for Saul, seeing I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? fill thine horn with oil, and go, I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite: for I have provided me a king among his sons.

He rejected him because he was a poor leader!

1 Samuel 15:24 And Saul said unto Samuel, I have sinned: for I have transgressed the commandment of the LORD, and thy words: because I feared the people, and obeyed their voice.

1 Samuel 15:26 And Samuel said unto Saul, I will not return with thee: for thou hast rejected the word of the LORD, and the LORD hath rejected thee from being king over Israel.

The PERMISSIVE will brings rejection!

The PERFECT will of God makes us VIRTUOSO’S!

1 Samuel 16:14 But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.

15 And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

16 Let our lord now command thy servants, which are before thee, to seek out a man, who is a cunning player on an harp: and it shall come to pass, when the evil spirit from God is upon thee, that he shall play with his hand, and thou shalt be well.

Guess who it was?

In one passage of scripture we see the VETO and the VIRTUOSO!!!

Anointed king … he played in the presence of the reject!!!

Are we performing as God’s virtuoso?

1: Vigilante Arrogance or a Vicarious Appointment

2: A Vial or a Vessel

3: A Veto or a Virtuoso

4: A Void or a  Vestige

1 Samuel 16:14 But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.

The PERMISSIVE will always results in a VOID in our life.

When the Spirit of God departs, another spirit imparts!!!

Parable of the unclean spirits leaving a man … seven worse than himself!

Christianity is more than going AWAY from something … it means going TOWARD something else!

PERMISSIVE will: Void!

The PERFECT will of God NEVER leaves a void!

Hebrews 13:5 Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

1: Vigilante Arrogance or a Vicarious Appointment

2: A Vial or a Vessel

3: A Veto or a Virtuoso

4: A Void or a  Vestige

5: A Vexing Spirit or a Victorious Spirit

1 Samuel 16:14 But the Spirit of the LORD departed from Saul, and an evil spirit from the LORD troubled him.

15 And Saul's servants said unto him, Behold now, an evil spirit from God troubleth thee.

PERMISSIVE will: Always a vexing spirit!!!

Always trouble in your life!

PERFECT will … a VICTORIOUS Spirit!

1 Samuel 17:29 And David said, What have I now done? Is there not a cause?

1 Samuel 17:34 And David said unto Saul, Thy servant kept his father's sheep, and there came a lion, and a bear, and took a lamb out of the flock:

35 And I went out after him, and smote him, and delivered it out of his mouth: and when he arose against me, I caught him by his beard, and smote him, and slew him.

36 Thy servant slew both the lion and the bear: and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be as one of them, seeing he hath defied the armies of the living God.

37 David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. And Saul said unto David, Go, and the LORD be with thee.

And David slew Goliath

David became the greatest king Israel and the world ever knew.

Why?

Because he was s man after God’s own heart

He was a man God anointed

David represents the PERFECT will of God!!!

Close:

Which are you:

1: Vigilante Arrogance or a Vicarious Appointment

2: A Vial or a Vessel

3: A Veto or a Virtuoso

4: A Void or a  Vestige

5: A Vexing Spirit or a Victorious Spirit

Are you in God’s ERMISSIVE will

Or Are you in God’s PERFECT will?

Are you operating under the anointing of a little bottle, or a big horn?
